This week in general was really all about interacting with the kids. Since the second week of my internship the kids had special testing, I was assigned tasks such as copies in the copy room, laminating, stapling, organizing and such. Since the kids are now out of testing I am now able help the teacher out as a teacher aid in class. That means that I can help them with their work and hold some sort of authority over little situations in class. This week was really exciting for me because of all the interactions I had with the kids. There is one kid in particular that I can really connect with, because when I help him, I see so much of my own habits in him. He needs special help concentrating because he can't on his own, and I'm there to put light pressure to help him complete his work. I really love working with him because when I help him, it's like I'm helping myself. I like observing the class and taking initiative when it came to helping those students who needed assistance, because this week my bond with the students grew a lot.
My role model in my workplace is obviously my internship mentor, which is Ms. Marcial. There are so many qualities and characteristics that I see in her that I want to develop in myself, like her solid dedication to what she is passionate about. I see so much responsibility from Ms. Marcial, to teach her third grade students to the best of her ability, and I admire that so much and I wish I was like her in that sense. I want to be passionate about something and I want to be able to motivate myself to get up everyday and be prepared to invest myself into something that I love, and also something that contributes to my happiness and to the community. I also see Ms. Marcial communicating really well with the kids. I would really like to communicate well with children, because I feel like if you can communicate simply with a child, you can communicate really well with an adult.
What strikes me the most about my workplace is the personalities that each of the classes have. I see so much student work posted up on the walls of each classroom and I have noticed it makes a nice and cozy and comforting environment for the students who work inside it. Since I came at the end of the year, one of my jobs was taking all of the student work down so that they could take it home, but once I took everything off, the classroom looked so empty and lacked personality. The most important thing inside any classroom are the students inside it, as they set the tone and feeling for everything. Every student contributes their own part into the whole. I really appreciate Ms. Marcial for being really successful in bringing out the best in students, because their best selves impact greatly the success of other students at their age.
